If you're waiting for a free hour to show up in your calendar before you start working out, I have some bad news.
It's not coming.
There's no calm season on the way. After back to school comes Thanksgiving, then Halloween costumes, then the holidays, then somehow it's spring registration again. Work doesn't slow down. The kids' activities don't slow down. The group chat about the class party definitely doesn't slow down.
So if the plan is "I'll start when things settle," I say this with love: things are not going to settle.
The good news? The families I see thriving at City Fit Shop don't have more hours in their day than you do. They just stopped waiting for extra ones.
The "I need more free time first" trap
This is one of the most common things we hear from parents. It makes total sense. You're already stretched, so adding one more thing feels impossible.
But here's the problem with waiting for free time: it quietly turns "not right now" into "not this year."
Fitting it all in with busy family schedules is a real challenge. It isn't a willpower problem or a discipline problem. It's a logistics problem. And logistics problems get solved with a plan, not with guilt.
What I'm seeing in our gym right now
This fall has been something special. We have lots of new members, and many of our members are heading to HYROX Toronto this weekend. We're so proud of this crew for training hard and showing up for each other.
But the part I really want to talk about is who is signing up together.
Over the next few months, we have couples and mother-daughter teams competing in HYROX. And honestly, it warms my heart, and my daughter Verity's heart too, to watch these families train together.
We've seen so much lifting each other up. So much bonding. So much fun being had by family members training side by side.
I can't say enough about it, because that is exactly what we want to see in our City Fit Shop families. Families making fitness a part of their family, and a part of their life. Not just a workout.
Notice what those families did. They didn't find extra time. They took time they already wanted to spend together and made it active.
If you're thinking "that sounds great, but I have no idea where I'd even fit a class," that's exactly what a No Sweat Intro is for. It's a conversation with a coach about your schedule, your goals, and the most realistic place to start.
Start with one class. Not a perfect plan.
Most people who try to "get back into fitness" build a plan for their most organized self. Five workouts a week, meal prep on Sundays, 5am alarms. It lasts about eight days.
Here's what actually works for busy parents: one class you can repeat, plus one backup.
- Your one class: a time that works most weeks. Maybe it's a weeknight after the kids are fed, maybe it's early morning before anyone else is up, maybe it's a lunch break.
- Your backup: a second option for the weeks when your first one falls apart. Because some weeks, it will.
That's it. That's the plan.
One repeatable class counts. It is not a lesser version of "real" fitness. It's the version that actually happens, and a workout that happens beats a perfect workout that lives in your Notes app.
Missed Monday? The week isn't ruined.
Kids get sick. Meetings run long. Someone forgets their skates and you're back across town.
When that happens, a lot of us write off the whole week. "I'll just start fresh next Monday."
Please don't. Your week isn't ruined because Monday went sideways. That's what the backup class is for. Miss your first option, use your second. Miss both? Come back next week without the guilt spiral. Consistency is about returning, not about being perfect.
Make it a family thing
This is where City Fit Shop is a little different from a typical gym.
We were built for families. That means you don't always have to choose between "family time" and "my time." You can train with your partner. You can train alongside your kiddo in our Family Fit classes, where parents and kids ages 9 and up work out together. And with adult and kids programming under one roof, some families find a way for everyone to be active at the same time instead of juggling separate schedules all week.
That's one workout, one drive, and one hour that counts as both fitness and family time. Honestly, that's the most efficient thing you'll do all week.
It doesn't have to start with a race. The couples and mother-daughter teams training for HYROX right now all started with a first class. The race came later.
Whether you're coming solo, with your partner, or eventually with your kiddo, the starting point is the same: one class that fits.
What a No Sweat Intro actually is
A lot of people picture a gym intro as a fitness test where someone watches you struggle through burpees. That is not what this is.
A No Sweat Intro is a sit-down conversation with one of our coaches. We'll talk about:
- What your week actually looks like (the real version, not the aspirational one)
- What you want out of fitness, whether that's energy, strength, confidence, or keeping up with your kids
- Which class makes the most sense as your starting point
- What your backup option could be when life gets busy
You don't need to be in shape before you come in. You don't need to know which class to pick. That's our job.
No pressure. No intimidation. Just a starting point.
You don't need more free time. You need a first step.
The families training together in our gym this fall aren't superheroes. They're parents with full calendars who decided fitness could be part of their family life instead of one more thing competing with it.
You can start there too. One class. One backup. One conversation with a coach who genuinely wants to help you figure it out.
Book your No Sweat Intro here and let's find the spot in your week that actually works.
